The year 1984 (MCMLXXXIV) of the Gregorian Calendar was a leap year that began on a Sunday and ended on a Monday. This has been the only leap year thus far that had Friday the 13th occur three times. On January 1st the Bell System was broken up and the Soviet Union supplied France with it's first delivery of natural gas. Also, Lieut. Robert C. Goodman, Jr. a U.S navy pilot was released from captivity in Syria.
After a hundred and sixteen year hiatus, U.S. and Vatican exchange diplomats. Also, Italy and the Vatican agree to end Roman Catholicism as state religion.
The 33rd Republican National Convention, at Dallas, renominates President Reagan and George H.W. Bush and President Reagan was re-elected in a landslide with 525 electoral votes to 13 for former vice president Walter Mondale.
Many international occurrences occurred in 1984, including: The Soviet Union withdrawing from the summer Olympic games in the US; Jose Napoleon Duarte being elected president of El Salvador; Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi being assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards, where 1,000 people were killed in anti-Sikh riots. 300 people were killed as the Indian Army occupied the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar; and a toxic gas leaks from Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, which killed 2,000 and injured 150,000.
Wimbledon women included Martina Navratilova who defeated C. Evert Lloyd (7-6 6-2) and the men were John McEnroe who defeated J.Connors (6-1 6-1 6-2). And the Kentucky Derby Champion was Swale. In the NCAA Basketball Championship Georgetown defeated Houston (84-75). BYU were the NCAA Football Champions (13-0-0)
Also in 1984, Apple introduced the user-friendly Macintosh personal computer.

- September 4: After 20 years of Liberal Leadership, The Conservatives lead by Brian Mulroney win the Federal election in Canada.
- September 20: The U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon was attacked by a suicide bomber, killing 12 people.

- October 31: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in her own residential garden in New Delhi by her own guards.

December 3: A gas leak from the Union Carbide Corporation leaks into the town of Bhopal, India killing 2,000 instantly. After the Bhopal Disaster 4 to 8 thousand people have died as a result of the deadly chemicals.
