1984 is a novel by author George Orwell (pen name of Eric Arthur Blair) that focuses on the evils of totalitarianism. The story line follows Winston Smith as he encounters problems when he and others begin to challenge the regime of "Big Brother" by falling in love with a woman, Julia. The book has been adapted for the big screen two times, in 1956 and 1984.
