Plot Synopsis
1984 takes place in a futuristic society where everything is controlled by a centralized totalitarian government. The central character is Winston Smith, a worker at the government's Ministry of Truth, which decides what truth is and what it isn't. The story line follows Smith as he encounters problems when he and others begin to challenge the regime of "Big Brother" by falling in love with a woman. After hiding and eluding the thought police for a while, they are both captured and "re-educated". After their release, they are ambivalent toward each other. Control is restored, and "Big Brother" remains in control. -
