- January 15: Vietnam War: Citing progress in the peace process in Vietnam, Richard Nixon suspends all American offensive action.
- January 15: All four burglars involved in the Watergate Break-In plead guilty to seven counts.
- January 23: Henry Kissinger and Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho reach an agreement in Paris to end the Vietnam War.
- January 27: Vietnam War: The Vietnam peace accords were signed in Paris.

- February 27: The American Indian Movement seized the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, they would hold the town 71 days.
