The year 1972 (MCMLXXII) of the Gregorian Calendar began on Saturday and ended on Sunday. The Lunar Calendar marked Chinese New Yearon February 15 of this year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Rat.
1972 saw a great deal of violence worldwide. Attempts to establish peace in Vietnam failed; Northern Vietnam had proposed a compromise that it would no longer seek the disestablishment of the South Vietnam government if Communist troops were allowed to stay in South Vietnam. The U.S. agreed to the compromise, and declared that peace was eminent in the area. However, when Nixon was re-elected to office, the decision was overturned and the military strikes resumed.http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/vietnam/
The 1972 Summer Olympics were marred by tragedy, when the Black Septmeber PLO group broke past security at the Olympic Village, and killed two coaches, before taking nine hostages. The takeover ended in the killing of the hostages and the commandos as they attempted to flee.http://www.inthe70s.com/generated/time1972.shtml
